  • The following appeared on 11 May 1879 in The Commonwealth: (Topeka) Last Tuesday evening Mr. William McCoy, of Williamsport township, died of pneumonia, after six days' illness. He was buried on Thursday morning in the Wakarusa cemetery. The funeral sermon was preached in the Presbyterian Church by Mr. Wright, the pastor. There were present about two hundred and fifty persons. Mr. McCoy was born in Jefferson County, Ohio, in 1818 [sic], and lived in Winterville in that county until he removed to Kansas. He came here in the spring of 1876, and bought the well-known Judge Holmes place. Though he lived here so short a time he was widely known and much respected. He was Elder and Trustee of the Wakarusa Presbyterian Church, and was also District Treasurer of School District No. 40. He was one of the men that a new country so largely needs, earnest, active and energetic in advancing the religious interests of the community.
