- Harry Lyons Gilchriese was born on 4 June 1892 in Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada.
- The following appeared on 18 January 1928 in the Buffalo Courier-Express: Frank C. Gilchriese, former newspaperman, died suddenly at his home, 89 Minneapolis avenue. For the last four years, he has been engaged as a bureau clerk in the department of parks, assigned to the building division. He appeared in his customary health Monday. Death was due to heart trouble.
Mr. Gilchriese was born at Welland, Ont. He studied law, but gave up that profession to enter the newspaper business upon coming to Buffalo about 30 years ago. He covered the city hall for the Buffalo Commercial and later the Buffalo Evening News. Later he returned to the Commercial and at the time he gave up newspaper work he was on the Buffalo Examiner.
Reporting baseball games became a feature of his work and he seldom missed a game of the Buffalo team. He had an extensive acquaintance among baseball players. He also was well known in public and political circles because of his work as a reporter at the city hall.
Fellow employes of Mr. Gilchriese recalled that he was in a reminiscent mood at the office of the division of buildings on Monday afternoon. He wrote lines on the desk blotter, among them the following:
Pleasure is like the poppy spread;
You seize it, and the bloom is shed.
Or like the rainbow's awful form,
Evanishing amid the storm.
Or like the snowflake on the river.
A moment seen, then gone forever.
Or like the Borealis race.
That flits 'ere you can mark its place.
He is survived by his wife, Jane C. Hunt Gilchriese, a sister of William Hunt, warden of Great Meadow prison; a son, Harry L. Gilchriese of New York, and a sister, Mrs. William Boissevain.
