- The following appeared on 15 April 1900 in The Illustrated Buffalo Express: The police of the Fifth Precinct have been looking diligently for the last two weeks for a young man who on Monday, April 2d, ran down little Thomas Warren Dunn, the seven-year-old son of Howard J. Dunn of No. 162 St. James Place. They have been keeping quiet about the matter, because up to last nighyt it was thought that the lad might die of his injuries and the police feared that if that fact and the fact that they were on the lookout for the man were known he would disappear. Now he is permitted to know, if he reads the papers, that the police are after him, but he has the consolation of knowing that the boy whom he ran down probably will recover from his injuries.
The Dunn boy, who is the grandson of James H. Dunn, superintendent of the Gould Coupler Company, was on his way back to school after the noon recess on April 2d. He goes to school at the building on Elmwood Avenue near Breckenridge Street. While he was crossing Elmwood Avenue, a young man, neatly dressed, came along on a bicycle. He rode fast, paying no attention to a group of boys, of which young Dunn was one. He rode into the midst of the lads, striking Dunn and knocking him down. The wheelman was thrown, but he jumped up, picked up his wheel and rode on without even asking if the boy was hurt.
Little Dunn was lying on the street with blood flowing from a deep gash in his forehead. His playmates picked him up and helped him to his home. Dr. Howard was called and he pronounced the boy's condition serious. The child did not improve and Dr. Mickle was called into consultation. Earl last week the doctors said they feared the boy would die, but yesterday he began to improve and last night he was pronounced out of danger. The police, who were notified of the occurrence, immediately after it happened, profess to be watching for the man. They have but a slight clue to work on and it is believed to be doubtful if he is found. - Howard James Dunn and Jean Craig Simpson appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1900 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York, at 162 St James Place.
