  • The following appeared in The Boerne Star & Recorder: Aubrey Russell Upshaw, Jr. "Russ," 82, a resident of Fair Oaks Ranch passed away early Thursday morning, Dec. 28, 2006, following a brief illness. He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Evelyn T. Upshaw; daughter, Susan Thomas and husband, Ken, of San Antonio; daughter, Louise Upshaw-McClenny and husband Bruce, of Houston; sister Catherine Carter of Knoxville; three grandchildren, Ashley Thomas, Russell McClenny and Aubrey McClenny; and numerous nieces and nephews.
         Born in Birmingham, Ala., on Feb. 16, 1924, Russ met his wife, the former Evelyn Torbert, as a freshman at Auburn University. He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. The two married shortly before he left for Italy as a Troop Carrier Command pilot. He flew numerous missions and participated in the invasion of Southern France.
         Upon his return to the U.S., Russ graduated from Auburn with a degree in Aviation Management. He served in many management positions during his 40 years with Eastern Airlines until his retirement as vice president of Government Affairs, Washington, D.C., in 1986. Throughout his career and in retirement, Russ served in a wide variety of volunteer leadership roles, including chairmanships of the National Orthopedic Hospital in Arlington, VA, and the Washington, D.C. based Presidential Classroom and the Junior Achievement of Washington, D.C.
         Since moving to Fair Oaks Ranch, he has served on the board of the FOR Homeowners Association, president of the Ostomy Association of South Texas and mentored FOR students. He was a deacon in Presbyterian churches in Florida and Virginia and has been a member of St. Mark Presbyterian Church in Boerne for 14 years.
         Russ was a lifelong athlete and avid sports fan. A dedicated golfer, he was also a vigorously competitive tennis player until just a few short weeks before his death. He particularly loved sharing his passion for baseball with his daughters and grandchildren. A memorial service will be Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at 3 p.m. at the St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 208 W. Bandera, Boerne.
