  • The following appeared on 2 January 1930 in the Dallas Morning News: (Crockett, Jan. 1) Horatio Durst, 86, native Texan, ex-confederate soldier, capitalist, and landowner, died at his home in Crockett Wednesday morning. He was born in the Old Stone Fort at Nacogdoches being one of twelve children. His parents settled in Nacogdoches in the early twenties.
         Mr. Durst joined the Confederate Army about 1862, being a member of Hood's Brigade. He was promoted to First Lieutenant and served until the close of the war. He spent most of his life on his large estate at Leona in Leon County, having just recently moved to Crockett.
         He is survived by his wife and four daughters, Mrs. J. P. Hail and Mrs. L. L. Moore of Crockett, Mrs. Margaret Scales and Mrs. Mildred Giraurd of Houston, who are spending the winter in Rome; three sons, Horatio Durst Jr. of Crockett, Louis of Houston and B.R. Durst of Texas City.
         He was a member of the Christian Church. Funeral services will he held in Crockett, and likely burial will be made at Leona on Thursday.
