William Owen Baldwin

  • He married Mary Ann Caroline Rugeley, daughter of Rowland Rugeley and Mary Ann Mickle, on 29 October 1840 in Lowndes County, Alabama.
  • On Thursday, 18 May 1849, Green Wood recorded in his travel journal: "Went to Mr. Davis's to Dinner & to Col. Wm O. Baldwin's in the evening. Saw some grand cane lands." And on the following day, "Looked at land in the vicinity of Col. Baldwin; saw Gamble land." On Saturday, the 19th, "Went home with Moses Davis. Saw some fine land." On Sunday, "At Davises & wrote letters & in the evening went home with Mr. Davis." On Monday, "Went to Mansfield, saw a great many acquaintances. Staid at night with Docter Baldwin. On Tuesday, "Went home with Col. Baldwin & after dinner to Mr. Haden's," and on Wednesday, the 23rd, "Returned in the evening to Col. Baldwin's." On the following day, Green set out for Shreveport. (Moses Davis was the husband of W. O. Baldwin's sister Amanda.)
  • William Owen Baldwin and Mary Ann Caroline Rugeley appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. Other members of the household included William O. Baldwin, Mary E. Baldwin and Sarah Caroline Baldwin. Also in the household was Rebecca Muss?, age 25, possibly Mary's sister.

  • On Sunday, 24 August 1851, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Had J. Abercrombie & Colonel Wm O. Baldwin, Moses & Mr Davis, Mr Remley, Mr Moseley & Mr Norton from Desoto Parrish Louisiana to Dinner. (Emily Amanda Baldwin Davis was the sister of William Owen Baldwin, and their first cousin Marion Augustus Baldwin's wife's sister was the wife of Henry Marshall Elmore.)
