  • Robert L. Hardy was born circa 1812 in Edgefield District, South Carolina.
  • He married Margaret C. Smyley circa 1837.
  • Robert L. Hardy appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Pine Flat, Dallas County, Alabama, enumerated near Dixon Hall Lewis's widow Susan Elmore.. It is interesting to note that in 1860 he is living in Walker County, Texas, next to Susan's brother Henry Elmore.
  • He was operating a saw mill, according to the 1850 census.
  • On Sunday, 9 November 1851, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Dr. J. E. Scott and Mr. Robert Scott and Mr. Hardy arrived this evening," and on Thursday, the 20th, "Dr. and Robt Scott left this morning for Leon."
  • On Monday, 26 January 1852, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Mr. R. L. Hardy and Family arrived here from Ala," and on Saturday, the 31st, "Sent the Ox waggons with Mr. Hardy's goods to his place."
  • On Sunday, 4 April 1852, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "To Dinner, Plenty of Garden Peas for a long table, Abercrombie, Hardy, Randle & Davis."
         Notes: May have been Walker County physician Wheeler Randall or (his brother?) farmer Dudley Randall, and Mr. Davis may have been John J. Davis of Huntsville.
  • On Sunday, 6 June 1852, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: Mr Abercrombie, Mr Hardy & Talbot McGar & Mr Randal [probably Dudley Randall] here to dinner, Mr Powell & Wm B. Wood brought plenty of fish & a venison from the lake for Dinner.
  • On Sunday, 13 June 1852, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Mr Wm Scott & Mr Tom Snow from Alabama & Mr Hardy & Abercrombie."
  • On Thursday, 1 July 1852, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Wm B Wood returned to Dinner & Mr Hardy."
  • Robert L. Hardy and Margaret C. Smyley appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1860 in Waverly, Walker (later San Jacinto) County, Texas. Other members of the household included Isaac N. Hardy, William S. Hardy, Seth Robert Hardy, Pauline Hardy, John Calhoun Hardy and Sumpter Hardy.
  • He was a farmer, according to the 1860 census.
  • Robert L. Hardy and Margaret C. Smyley appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1870 in Huntsville, Walker County, Texas. Other members of the household included John Calhoun Hardy, Sumpter Hardy, Edwin A. Noble and Pauline Hardy.
  • Robert L. Hardy died on 11 November 1875.
  • His wife Margaret C. Smyley became a widow at his death.
  • He was interred at Waverly Cemetery, Waverly, Walker (later San Jacinto) County, Texas.
