  • The following appeared on 6 January 1927 in The San Antonio Light: Col. Charles Churchill Gibbs, 84, Confederate veterna, pioneer Texs railroad man, and builder and owner of the Gibbs building, died at 9 o'clock Wednesday night at his residence, 905 Mason street. /P/ He was born in Ruckersville, Ga., on June 6, 1842. He served through four years of the Civil War and at the close of the war, settled for a short time in Grimes county. Later he went to Houston and became associated with the Southern Pacific lines, with whom he had been in various capacities until his death. /P/ He came to San Antonio and was for many years general frieght agent for the S. P. Later he was made director of the road, and for a time served as railroad commissioner. /P/ Colonel Gibbs had retired from active business several years ago, but he gave his personal supervision to local holdings until the time of his death. /P/ He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Marion Gibbs Burnett, wife of Maj. John D. Burnett of Washington; a granddaughter, Mrs. Star McDaniel Heimsath and a grandson, Gibbs McDaniel, both of Bridgeport, Conn. Funeral arrangements have not been announced, pending the arrival of relatives.
