He owned about eight thousand acres of land in a body, and a large amount of other property. His first wife was Rebecca Marks, daughter of Nicholas Marks; she was a general favorite with her family. Mr. Mathews was heard to say on one occasion that whenever one of the family was taken sick, they would always send for "Beck," as he called her. they had no children. Mrs. Mathews died at not an advanced age. After a few years Mr. Mathews married a young lady, Miss Mayhue. There were no children by this marriage. Mr. Mathews lived to a good old age; and before his death he willed all his property to his last wife, who survived her husband a few years, and at her death she willed it to Mrs. Mathews, afterwards Mrs. Forniss, a niece of his first wife and daughter of Gen. James F. Watkins.
