Nicholas Marks was immensely rich; his property, like most planters, consisted of land, negroes and money. The enhanced value of lands, the natural increase of negroes and stock, the large crops made and the general prosperity of the country in thos days, all naturally contributed towards making men rich. Mr. Marks was a very plain and unassuming man, very kind to his neighbors and friends, and was among the very best citizens of his day. He had an excellent and intelligent family of sons and daughters. William, his oledst son, first married a Miss Olive. His second wife was a daughter of the grand old gentleman Spencer Crane, of Georgia. One of Mr. Marks daughters married William B. S. Gilmer, a wealthy and popular gentleman who represented Montgomery county in the Legislature on one or two occasions. Another was the wife of James F Watkins; another the wife of Gen. Tom Scott, and another the wife of Little George Mathews, as before mentioned. Mr. Marks lived to a ripe old age.
