  • The following appeared on 22 August 1916 in the Austin American: Frank Kempe, a [illegible] painter about 58 years of age, was struck by an automobile at Congress and Eighth Tuesday [the 21st] afternoon at 4:30 o'clock and sustained a fractured skull and a broken ankle. Edwin Burkland, driving the car, is a resident of round Rock. He was driving north on Congress avenue and the accident happened at the south side of the crossing. After Kempe had been struck and knocked to the pavement, Burkland, made nervous by the accident, attempted to back his car and ran over the injured man's foot, fracturing his ankle. /P/ The injured man was carried to a local hospital where he underwent an operation. His injuries were pronounced serious.
  • The following appeared on 23 August 1916 in the Austin American: Frank Kempe, a local contracting painter, was run over and seriously hurt by an automobile at Eighth Street and Congress Avenue, Tuesday afternoon between 4 and 5 o'clock. He suffered a fractured skull and a broken leg, and was reported Wednesday morning to be still in a stupor at the Seton Infirmary. /P/ The car was a new Buick, owned by F. A. Burkland, a farmer living near Round Rock. It was the first time it had been driven to the city. Eye-witnesses said that the car was not moving rapidly. /P/ Mr. Kempe's home is east of the city. He is between 59 and 60 years of age.
  • Frank Kempe died on 12 October 1916 in Austin, Travis County, Texas, at Seton Infirmary having been hospitalized since his automobile accident. (Date on his grave marker is the 10th.)
  • He was interred at Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Travis County, Texas.
  • The following appeared on 13 October 1916 in the Austin American: Frank Kempe, aged 59 years, died at the Seton Infirmary Thursday at noon after an illness of several weeks from the effects of injuries received in an automobile accident in Austin, Aug. 22. /P/ He was born in Germany and came to Austin thirty-five years ago, residing here almost continuously ever since. He was a widower and is survived by several children who live in different parts of the State. Funeral services will be held at the family residence on Rosewood Avenue, Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock.
  • On 11 June 1903, in Travis County, Frank Kempe and Elizabeth Schneider were married. Further research is required to determine the identity of that Frank Kempe.
  • It is an educated guess, but not yet verified satisfactorily, that Frank Kemp and John Kempe were brothers. Frank's wife Ida was buried in an Oakwood plot owned by John Kempe. John had a son Frank, although it appears that Frank did not have a son John. They both had sons named Otto.
