John Whitten Barrett

  • John Whitten Barrett was born on 20 May 1813 in Greenville District, South Carolina.
  • He married Hulda Reding, daughter of Iredell Reding and Martha Hallum, on 7 April 1837 in Mustang Prarie, Houston County, Texas.
  • John Whitten Barrett and Hulda Reding appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Walker County, Texas. Other members of the household included Steven Reding Barrett, William Robert Barrett, Nancy Elizabeth Barrett, Martha Elizabeth Barrett, David Albert Barrett and Amanda Catherine Barrett.
  • He was a farmer, according to the 1850 census.
  • On Monday, 3 January 1853, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Killed some hogs bought of Martin from the Beadies, 27 weighing 4392 lb at 6 cents,  paid him part check and gave order on J.W. Barrett for $142.56 (making 7960 lb pork put up)."
  • The following appeared on 29 January 1853 in The Huntsville Item: The Southern mail came in on Tuesday, very bulky. It is the first one we have had for about 18 days. The creeks have been so high, it has been impossible to get through. We learn, however, from Mr. Viser, who just returned from the Beedis on Wednesday, that the creek is nearly fordable and the Trinity falling fast. We cannot have everything to suit, or the Trinity would stay up and the creeks down.
  • James Withers Barrett was the adopted son of John Whitten and Hulda Reding Barrett.
  • John Whitten Barrett died on 6 May 1877 at age 63 in Madison County, Texas.
