  • The following appeared on 22 August 1935 in the Galveston Daily News: News of the death of Charles Dickey Goldthwaite, 63, former Galvestonian, in Los Angeles, Cal., Tuesday night as the result of an automobile accident was received in Galveston yesterday. Mr. Goldthwaite was a member of a pioneer Galveston family, and moved to the west coast in 1901, where he was engaged in the general contracting business. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Goldthwaite, pioneer residents. He married Miss Eileen Goggan of Waco and is survived by his wife, three sons and one daughter, and a brother Willis Goldthwaite. Mr. Goldthwaite during his residence in Galveston was one of eight Galvestonians who organized the Galveston Quartet Society. He was also a member of the "Merry Four," which was renowned for its serenading here. The members included Mr. Goldthwaite, J. W. Hertford, Julius W. Jockusch and Charles J. Stubbs. Mr. Goldthwaite was a descendant of the original Witherspoon, who signed the declaration of Independence. His mother was Miss Ella Willis of the P. J. Willis family here. The old Goldthwaite home was located on 23d and I, the site of the present Rosenberg Library. Relatives in Galveston include his cousins, George Sealy, William and Robert Sealy, Mrs. Frederick M. Burton and Mrs. E. R. Newell.
