He was born in Old Waverly, Texas in San Jacinto County on March 15, 1927, to Henry and Emily (Dewald) Lewis. Left to cherish his memory are daughters, Laura Lewis Everett (David) of Katy, TX, Susan Lewis Caldwell (Tom) of Hendersonville, Tennessee and Sarah Lewis Woods (Carl) of Huntsville, TX; sister Mary Ann Marion of Old Waverly; sisters-in-law Emmy Lewis of Denton, Linda O'Banion (Turner), Shirley Morgan, and Betty Sue Morgan of Huntsville; granddaughter Caroline Hoyt (Cad); grandsons, Douglas Everett (Alexandra) and Paul Everett, Austin Caldwell (Jennifer), Jesse Caldwell and Seth Caldwell; granddaughters, Amanda Herrera (Matt) and Elizabeth Woods; great-grandson Jacob Herrera. He is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Morgan Lewis, his parents, his brother John Dixon Lewis, brothers-in-laws Gene Marion, Eugene, Melvin (Bro), and Bobby Morgan and sister-in-law Margie Morgan.
         Elmore grew up on the Lewis ranch in Old Waverly, Texas learning how to farm the land and raise cattle. In 1943, at age 16 he graduated from New Waverly High School and enrolled at A&M University that same fall. In 1945, at age 18, he decided to join the Navy serving a two year tour just after World War II ended. Elmore returned home from the Navy to care for his ailing father and run the family farm. In 1957 after a 4 month courtship, he married his love, Dorothy. They raised their 3 girls in Old Waverly. Dorothy taught school in Coldspring and Elmore ran a dairy for several years and then raised cattle and built houses mainly throughout the San Jacinto and Walker County areas. Elmore was a life-long member of the Waverly Presbyterian Church serving as an elder and teaching Sunday school. He served on the Waverly Cemetery Association most of his adult life. He loved his family and also enjoyed at different times in his life to deer hunt, fish, golf, play bridge, and swap tall tales while assuring you that a Lewis would not tell a lie.

         Services for Elmore will be held Thursday, April 5, 2012, 2 p.m. at Waverly Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dan Alexander officiating. Interment will follow at Old Waverly Cemetery in Old Waverly, Texas. Family will receive friends Wednesday, April 4, 2012, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville. Pall Bearers will be his 5 grandsons and 2 grandsons-in-law.
