  • The following appeared on 26 March 1953 in The Abilene Reporter News: Mrs. G. L. Christian, 71, a teacher her for 31 years, died unexpectedly Wednesday in a San Antonio hospital.
         Mrs. Christian, a native of Mississippi, taught for 29 years at College Heights School, retiring there in 1948.
         She moved to Abilene from Mississippi in 1894, with her father, the late Ed Pegues, and her brothers and sisters.
         She entered the academy at Simmons College and graduated with a certificate of music in 1899. She didn't receive her degree, however, until 1930.
         Mr. and Mrs. Christian were married in the First Baptist Church here. Shortly after they were married, the couple built a home at 1834 Hickort, where she lived until moving to San Antonio in 1948.
         Mrs. Christian's teaching career started here in 1917, when she was elected to teach at Lamar School. Her starting salary was $55 per month.
         in 1920, she joined the College Heights faculty, which then was made up of only four teachers. She started teaching in the second grade and continued in that position most of her teaching career.
         Her husband, the late Gideon Louis Christian, died here in 1912.
         Mrs. Christian was active in the First Baptist Church; held membership in the John Davis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was a charter member of the Abilene Knife and Fork Club, and was a member of the Abilene Classroom Teachers Association.
         Funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in San Antonio. The body will be brought to Abilene for rites here.
         Rites will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Kiker-Warren Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Millard A. Jenkins, former pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.
         Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery beside the grave of her husband.
         Pallbearers will be Jimmy Ballew, John Hutchison, Esco Walter, Everett Haney, Bob Sellers, and Gordon Weir.
         Survivors include three sons, Dr. T. E. Christian of San Antonio, Jack Christian of Littlefield, and Lawrence Christian of Amarillo; six grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Virginia Litwin of Crystal City, Mrs. A. M. Girand of San Antonio, Mrs. Ruth Bidelspacher of Raymondville, and Mrs. Helen Houston of Stanton; and two brothers, Scott Pegues and Claude Pegues of Crystal City.
         A number of nieces and nephews live in Abilene.
