         Born in McClellanville, SC, July 3, 1909, son of the late Dr. Edward A. and Lucy Pegues McClellan.
         Preceded by wife, Miriam Kelly McClellan. Survived by one daughter, Elizabeth M. Fleming, and son-in-law, Mack G. Fleming, of Seneca, SC; two grandchildren, Katharine L. Dukes of Austin, Texas and John McClellan Fleming of Washington, DC; one great grandson, Caleb McClellan Dukes of Austin, Texas; one brother, Archibald J. McClellan of Florence, SC; and one nephew, Robert E. McClellan of Greenville, SC.
         Chief McClellan was a graduate of the F.B.F. National Academy, Washington, DC and spent forty-one years in law enforcement in South Carolina. He served with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, rising to the rank of Lieutenant, until 1959 when he became Chief of Police in Greenwood, SC; until 1962 when he became Chief of Security and Harbor Master of the S.C. Ports Authority in Charleston, SC until retirement in 1974.
         He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and served in World War II and was past President and life member of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Association; member of American Legion Post 184, Campbell Nursing Home, Anderson, SC; and member of Hibben United Methodist Church, Mount Pleasant, SC.
         The funeral service for Chief Rufus McClellan will be Thursday, June 27, 2002 at the Graveside, Wappetaw Presbyterian Church Cemetery at 2:00 o'clock. Friends may visit with the family at the graveside from 1:00 until time of service.
