Shipp Gillespie Sanders

  • The following appeared in the Denton Record-Chronicle: Shipp Sanders, brother of Miss Martha Sanders of T. S. C. W. faculty, died in his home in Chapel Hill, N. C., Wednesday afternoon, word was received by his sister here. Although he had been in ill health for some time his death was unexpected. Funeral and burial will be in Chapel Hill. Miss Sanders will not attend, having visited her brother at Christmas. Sanders was professio of classical languages at the University of North Carolina, and was the son of the late Samuel G. Sanders, professor of classical languages at Southwestern University in Georgetown, and Mrs. Sanders. His wife and six brothers and sisters survive.

  • He was interred at Old Chapel Hill Cemetery, Chapel Hill, Orange County, North Carolina.
  • The following appeared on 27 January 1944 in The Daily Times-News: (Chapel Hill, Jan. 27) Prof. Shipp Gillespie Sanders, 55, of the University of North Carolina faculty and brother-in-law of Dr. Frank P. Graham, University president, died here yesterday. He had been ill for several months.
         Prof. Sanders taught Latin and Greek here for 20 years.
         He was a native of Georgetown, Tex. He was graduated from Southwester university and received the master's degree from Princeton. He taught at Dartmouth and had done graduate work at the University of Wisconsin.
         The widow, three sisters and three brothers survive.
