Charles Henry Thomas

b. circa 1834, d. 12 June 1862
  • Charles Henry Thomas was born circa 1834 in Marengo County, Alabama.
  • Mary (?) appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Montgomery County, Texas. Other members of the household included Charles Henry Thomas, John Thomas, Albert Thomas, Rufus W. Thomas and Elizabeth R. Thomas. With the exception of Mary, everyone else in the household is enumerated under the surname Perkins, apparently because J[oel?] Perkins was living with them. The only person enumerated in the next household is Virginia-born Ann Edwards, age 75, likely Mary's mother.
  • He was a farmer, according to the 1850 census.
  • He married Amanda Eliza McCaleb, daughter of Zill H. McCaleb and Mary Elizabeth Martin, on 10 February 1859 in Montgomery County, Texas.
  • Charles Henry Thomas and Amanda Eliza McCaleb appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1860 in Montgomery PO, Montgomery County, Texas, not far from Amanda's family.. Other members of the household included Rufus W. Thomas. The next household consists of A. Edwards (age 77) likely Charles' maternal grandmother, and Charles' sister E. R. Thomas (age 18), and also "A. Jackson," (age 23), who may actually be their brother Albert Thomas.
  • He was a farmer, according to the 1860 census.
  • Charles Henry Thomas died on 12 June 1862 on the march from Crockett to Arkansas, likely of measles in the hospital at Mt. Enterprise in Rusk County, Texas.
  • His wife Amanda Eliza McCaleb became a widow at his death.
  • For a biographical sketch and an account of his CSA service in Captain Samuel Dunbar Wooldridge's Company (later Company B), 24th Texas Cavalry Regiment, see his profile in Karen McCann Hett's Danville Mounted Riflemen.
