  • The following appeared on 26 December 1902 in The Augusta Chronicle: (Atlanta, Dec. 25) Benjamin Neal Thornton, son of E. H. Thornton, president of the Neal Loan and Banking company, committee suicide tonight by shooting himself through the right temple in the room of his cousin, Robert Keely, at the Scotia apartment house. Thornton was about 30 years old and a prominent young society man. No cause for his act could be learned other than that he was in poor health.
