Biographical/Historical Note: Thomas Arthur Walthall, Jr., the son of Thomas Arthur and Mary LeGrand Weaver Walthall, was born September 12, 1878, in Newbern, Hale County, Alabama. As a prominent member of the agricultural sector, he built a cotton gin in 1912, which served farmers from Hale and surrounding counties. T.A. Walthall, Jr. married Melanie Pollard in 1901 and produced three sons: T.A. Walthall III, George Pollard Walthall and Robert LeRoy Walthall. After T.A. Walthall, Jr. died in 1937, his three sons continued the family’s agricultural role in the community by operating, at different periods, two cotton gins and a dairy farm. Beyond these activities, the family sold cotton seed and fertilizer and provided cotton storage in their warehouse.
