  • The following appeared on 12 August 1927 in The Birmingham News: Dr. A. E. Meadow, 67, of 1111 Twentieth Street, committed suicide by stabbing himself in the heart with a surgeon’s knife early Friday. He had been in ill health a number of months and despndency was believed to be the cause.
         The body of Dr. Meadown, who has held many high positions in traternal orders and who was a widely known physician and surgeon of Birmingham, was found in the bathtub at the residence of Robert Jacobs, who, with his wife, resides at the Meadows home.
         Dr. Meadow is believed to have brooded over his recent loss of weight. Thursday night he walked to Five Points and weighed himself. The scales showed 127 pounds and this is believed to have caused his decision.
         Shortly after 6 a.m. Friday Mr. Jacobs heard Dr. Meadow walking in the hall. When Mr. Jacobs inquired about him, he said, “I’m lost.” A few moments later Mr. Jacobs found him in the bathtub, nude and clutching the knife which had entered his heart.
         Mrs. Meadow was in a state of collapse.
         Dr. Meadow formerly was past worshipful master of Mineral City Lodge, Masons; past grand master I. O. O. F., and a past grand representative of the national Odd Fellows. He had been a Mason 42 years.
         Born Nov. 22, 1856, in Waverly, Tenn., Dr. Meadows had lived in Birmingham 32 years. He had been surgeon for the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company at Blocton 29 years.
         His offices, formerly in the Bankers Bond Building, had been removed to his residence recently because of ill health. For a number of years his officers were in the Farley Building, where he had long been associated with Dr. W. W. Clapp and the late Dr. Ballard.
         Dr. Meadow was one of the few homeopathic physicians in Birmingham.
         Surviving are his widow, two sons, Percy L., of Jacksonville, Fla., and Bert, of Birmingham, a daughter, Josephine, of Birmingham, six brothers, the Rev. Frank Meadow, Jesse, Henry, John A., James and Thomas, two sisters, Mrs. H. N. Dunbar, of California, and Miss Susie Meadow of McCuen, Tenn.
         Call Officers Ellard and Burkett and Coroner Russum answered the call to the Meadow home after the tragedy had been discovered.
         Funeral services will be conducted at the residence, 1111 South Twentieth Street, at 4 p.m. Sunday, burial to follow in Oak Hill cemetery, Ridout directing.

Meadow, 67, Birmingham physician, who died Friday at the residence, 1111 South Twentieth Street, of a self-inflicted knife wound, were conducted from the residence at 4 p.m. Sunday. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Ridout in charge. Surviving are the widow, two sons, a daughter, six brothers and two sisters.
