There is little doubt that this is the correct census for Langston James Goree, based among other things upon the name and age range for him. Apparently Susan has been assigned the wrong age, and some of the young people in the household are too old to be their children, but perhaps are siblings or other relatives.

  • Langston James Goree and Sarah Williams Kittrell appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1840 in Perry County, Alabama. Also in the household was a second female aged 30-39, whose identity is unknown, and may have been in the household in 1830.
  • He was a farmer, according to the 1850 census.
  • Langston James Goree died on 5 July 1853 at age 59 in Trinity County, Texas.
  • His wife Sarah Williams Kittrell became a widow at his death.
  • He was interred at Midway Cemetery, Madisonville, Madison County, Texas.
  • The following appeared on 27 April 1889 in The Galveston Daily News: (Huntsville, April 26) There is to be a dinner at Major Goree's to-day, given in honor of his aged and venerable mother, Mrs. Sarah W. Goree, who will celebrate the 82nd anniversary of her birth. Only her old lady friends will be participants in the banquet, but her numerous friends of all ages and sexes will join in wishing for the venerable lady many happy returns of the day. Mrs. Goree still retains the use of all her faculties and enjoys robust health, and is possessed of unusual activity both of mind and body. Her husband, Dr. Langston Goree, died soon after coming to Texas, in Trinity county, in 1853.
