  • The following appeared on 3 May 1901 in The Columbus Enquirer-Sun:
Mr. John M. Diffley died at 12:30 o'clock this morning at his home on upper First avenue, between Eighteenth and Nineteenth streets, after a short illness of appendicitis. He was taken last Friday night, and on Monday night an operation was performed, it being believed that there was a possibility that this would save his life. He continued to sink, however, and last night it was seen that he was dying, so that when the end came, sad as it was, the watchers at his bedside were not surprised.
Mr. Diffley was 47 years of age, and besides his wife and eight children, is survived by his mother, Mrs. L. J. Diffley, of Montgomery, Ala; by three brothers, Messrs. P. F. Diffley, of Montgomery, Henry Diffley, of Tallassee, Ala., and W. M. Diffley, of Nashville, Tenn; and by three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Pike, of Birmingham, Ala., Mrs. Martha Hanie, of Montgomery, and Mrs. Ellen Schoolcraft, of this city.
For many years he had been connected with the City Mills, and was one of that company's most trusted and valued employes. Honest, straight-forward and hard working, he was a man generally liked and respected by all with whom he came in contact. He had many warm friends who will sincerely grieve his death.
The funeral services will take place from the Church of the Holy Family this afternoon at 4 o'clock, and will be conducted by Rev. Father Schlenke. The interment will be in Linwood cemetery.
