  • The following appeared in the Southern Christian Advocate: [Eulogy] Major Augustus G. Nagel was born in Anhalt, Germany, and died in Macon, Ga., Dec. 26th 1866, aged about 80 years. His father and two brothers were ministers of the gospel in the Presbyterian Church. . . . In early manhood he made a tour of the United States, and having married a lady in Edgefield Dist., S. C., settled permanently there, where he raised a large family. He was the last surviving member of the old Savannah Guards of 1812.
