  • Sam M. Harris was born circa 9 May 1870 in Willis, Montgomery County, Texas.
  • Research Note: According to inforrmation recorded in the 1900 census, at that time Beverly and Harriet had been married for about 30 years, and Harriet had 9 of 9 children living. Also, although there is significant evidence that Sam Harris was born in May 1870, he is not among the chidlren enumerated in the household in that census. Nothing further is yet known of children Sally, Frances, Emma and Julia, who were enumerated in their household in 1870.
  • Beverly and Harriet appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1880 in Montgomery County, Alabama. Other members of the household included Sam M. Harris, Rose Harris, Ella Harris, Fereby Harris, Gillis Harris, Liddie Dutch Harris and Benjamin Harris.
  • It is an educated guess that the three youngest children -- Johnie (age 6), Lena (5) and Missie (3) -- enumerated with Beverly and Harriet Harris in 1900, are all actually grandchildren, and the children of son Sam, who may have been recently widowed, although no evidence has been found thus far to support the theory.

  • He was a saloon keeper, according to the 1900 census.
  • He married Ida Mae Abercrombie, daughter of Taylor Abercrombie and Adeline Sikes, circa 1908.
  • Sam M. Harris and Ida Mae Abercrombie appeared in the US federal census of 15 April 1910 in Walker County, Texas. Other members of the household included Charlie Harris. And three railroad workers were boarding in the house.
  • He was a section foreman, according to the 1910 census.
  • Sam M. Harris and Ida Mae Abercrombie appeared in the US federal census of 1 January 1920 in New Waverly, Walker County, Texas. Other members of the household included Charlie Harris, John Jones, Forest Mosely, Tim Wood, George Wood, Daniel Moseley and Jimmie Baltrip. Most or all appear to be cousins -- requires further research.

  • He officially witnessed the death of Nellie Mae Harris on 7 November 1929 at 1819 Dan in Houston, Harris County, Texas; at her residence.
  • Sam M. Harris and Ida Mae Abercrombie appeared in the US federal census of 1 April 1930 in Houston, Harris County, Texas, at 1819 Dan Street. Other members of the household included Sammie Harris and Charlie Harris. Also in the household are niece Pearl Bawl (age 16) and boarder Tena Turner (age 13).
  • He was a railroad foreman, according to the 1930 census.
  • At the time of his death Sam M. Harris was living in Houston, Harris County, Texas, at 1819 Dan Street.
  • Sam M. Harris died on 1 May 1951 in Houston, Harris County, Texas, at St. Elizabeth Hospital . His death was officially witnessed by Charlie Harris.
  • His wife Ida Mae Abercrombie became a widow at his death.
  • He was interred at the old Danville cemetery, Montgomery County, Texas, off present-day Shepard Hill Road, near Willis.
