James Alston Pegues

  • James Alston Pegues was born circa 18 January 1838 in Tennessee.
  • Oliver Hazard Perry Pegues appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1860 in Cotton Plant PO, Rusk County, Texas. Other members of the household included James Alston Pegues, John G. Pegues, Eugenia Pegues, Ann Eliza Pegues, Massilon Pittman Pegues, Oliver Hazard Pegues, Mary Jane Pegues, Benjamin F. Pegues, Albert G. Pegues and Libbie T. Pegues. Also in the household was Sibbie/Libbie Pegues (age 20), born in Texas, whose origins are not yet known.
  • In service to the Confederate States of America, James Alston Pegues enrolled on 6 May 1862 at Henderson, Rusk County, Texas, as a 1st lieutenant in Captain R. H. Graham's Company, Waterhouse Jr's Regiment of Texas Volunteers, and was appointed Captain of Company I, 19th Texas Infantry Regiment, on 13 May 1862. He signed his parole as Commanding, Co. I, on 10 July 1865.
  • He married Mary Jane Boren, daughter of Samuel H. Boren.
  • James Alston Pegues and Mary Jane Boren appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1880 in Tyler, Smith County, Texas. Other members of the household included Gary Pegues and Sallie N. Pegues. Also in the household were two domestic servants.
  • He was a merchant, according to the 1880 census.
  • James Alston Pegues died on 7 July 1891.
  • His wife Mary Jane Boren became a widow at his death.
  • He was interred at Oakwood Cemetery, Tyler, Smith County, Texas.
