  • The following appeared on 11 June 1909 in The Montgomery Advertiser: Marion August Baldwin, aged fifty-eight years, a man of remarkable knowledge and literary attainments, and a member of one of the leading families of the city, passed away at the call of the death angel last evening at 10 o'clock at the residence of Mrs. Jesse James, 123 Columbus street, after a two weeks illness. /P/ "Gus" Baldwin, as he was familiarly known, was born in Montgomery February 20, 1851, and was the eldest surviving son of the late Dr. W. O. Baldwin. His older brother, Capt. William O. Baldwin, fell at the battle of Franklin, Tenn., at the age of nineteen years. /P/ The deceased was educated at the University of Virginia, where he spent five years and graduated with a Bachelor of Law degree. He practiced law in Montgomery for a while and at one time was editor of The Montgomery Dispatch. On July 17, 1887, Mr. Baldwin was united in marriage to Miss Mary Charles James, daughter of Dr. Alfred Scott James, and after the marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin moved to Elmore county, where they lived on their farm for about twelve years. Mr. Baldwin, however, spent the last ten years of his life in this city. /P/ Mr. Baldwin was one of the leading scholars of the community and one of the best informed men in the city. He was a man of remarkable knowledge and education, being a great reader all his life, and he was often appealed to for information by much older men. Besides his literary attainments he was also an excellent linguist. /P/ Besides his wife the deceased is survived by one brother, A. M. Baldwin, president of the First National Bank, four sisters, Mrs. Mary B. Williams and Mrs. Jennie B. Craik, of this city, Mrs. W. C. Maxwell of Charlotte, N. C., and Mrs. C. M. Bolton, of Virginia, besides many other relatives. /P/ The funeral will be held this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock from the residence of Mrs. James, 123 Columbus street. Rev. E. E. Cobbs, rector of St. John's Church, will officiate and interment will be had in Oakwood.
