Moses Davis

  • Moses Davis was born in May 1808 in Georgia.
  • He married Emily Amanda Baldwin, daughter of James Baldwin and Elizabeth White, on 5 June 1847 in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana.
  • On Thursday, 18 May 1849, Green Wood recorded in his travel journal: "Went to Mr. Davis's to Dinner & to Col. Wm O. Baldwin's in the evening. Saw some grand cane lands." And on the following day, "Looked at land in the vicinity of Col. Baldwin; saw Gamble land." On Saturday, the 19th, "Went home with Moses Davis. Saw some fine land." On Sunday, "At Davises & wrote letters & in the evening went home with Mr. Davis." On Monday, "Went to Mansfield, saw a great many acquaintances. Staid at night with Docter Baldwin. On Tuesday, "Went home with Col. Baldwin & after dinner to Mr. Haden's," and on Wednesday, the 23rd, "Returned in the evening to Col. Baldwin's." On the following day, Green set out for Shreveport. (Moses Davis was the husband of W. O. Baldwin's sister Amanda.)
  • It is worthy of note that Moses Davis is enumerated in the 1850 census next to the household of Charles S. Pegues, brother of Marcia Pegues Vanorden.
  • Moses Davis and Emily Amanda Baldwin appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. Also in the household were Amanda's children from earlier marriages, Frances E. Denson (age 13), William B. Denson (12), and Willis B. Darby (7). It is worthy of note that Moses Davis is enumerated in the 1850 census next to the household of Charles S. Pegues, brother of Marcia Pegues Vanorden.

  • On Sunday, 24 August 1851, Green Wood recorded in his plantation daily account book: "Had J. Abercrombie & Colonel Wm O. Baldwin, Moses & Mr Davis, Mr Remley, Mr Moseley & Mr Norton from Desoto Parrish Louisiana to Dinner. (Emily Amanda Baldwin Davis was the sister of William Owen Baldwin, and their first cousin Marion Augustus Baldwin's wife's sister was the wife of Henry Marshall Elmore.)
  • Moses Davis and Emily Amanda Baldwin appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1860 in Coldspring, Polk County, Texas, enumerated next to Amanda's brother James, with whom their mother and two nephews are living.. Other members of the household included Joseph William Davis and Amanda Baldwin Davis. Also in the household was overseer Jonathan Baxter and one farm worker.
  • He was a planter, according to the 1860 census.
  • Moses Davis died on 23 May 1866.
  • He was interred at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Coldspring, Polk County (now San Jacinto), Texas.
