  • The following appeared on 3 January 1862 in the Macon Daily Telegraph (from the Savannah Daily Morning News): Major Franklin S. Bloom. . . . Franklin S. Bloom was born in the year 1825, in Duchesss county, New York--a county long ago endeared to the Southern heart as having given birth to Gen John A. Quitman. He came to Macon, Georgia, in 1840, and made it his home. He rose to ba an Alderman of that city, and was Collector of Customs for the district of Macon, under the old and the present governments. In civic life he was ever distinguished for his public swpirit, and a peculiar energy of action, sustained by extraordinary hopefulness. He was thus naturally connected with the Fire Department of the city, from its earliest organization, and was Foreman of Protection Company, No. 1. In private life, no one was more generally beloved, since no one was more loving, then he. A friend more devoted the world did not contain. . . . [military service] . . . . Pneumonia, the seeds of which he had probably brought with him from the camp, fastened relentlessly upon his sturdy copnstitution, and, after ten days of severe suffering, on the night of Tursday [sic], the 19th of December, he died. . . .

Bloom applies to the undersigned for letters of Administration upon the Estate of Franklin S. Bloom, late of said county, deceased: These are therefore to cite and admonish all persons concerned, to be and appear in the office of the undersigned, on or before the first Monday in February, 1862, to show cause, if any they have, why Letters of Administration should not be granted to the applicant. (25th January 1861.)
