• John Ellerbe was born on 23 December 1787 in Cheraw, Chesterfield District, South Carolina.
• He married Martha Powe, daughter of Erasmus Powe and Esther Ellerbe, on 30 August 1809 in Cheraw, Chesterfield District, South Carolina.
• The following appeared on 4 September 1820 in the City Gazette and Commercial Daily Advertiser: In the House of Representatives, December 16, 1819, The Committee appointed to draft Resolutions and appoint Managers of Elections for the next General Elections, Report the following Resolutions: Resolved, That the election to be holden on the second Monday in October next, and the day following, for Senators and Members of the House of Representatives, shall be holden at the following places, and conducted by the following persons: . . . For Chesterfield --. . . At Chatham, managers Samuel Wilds Gillespie, John Ellerbe and Peter Vannorden.
• The following appeared on 9 August 1822 in the City Gazette & Commercial Daily Advertiser: Elections. In the House of Representatives, December 18, 1821, The committee appointed to draft resolutions and appoint Managers of Elections for the next General Elections, Report the following resolutions: Resolved, That the election to be holden on the second Monday in October next, and the day following, for Senators and Members of the House of Representatives, shall be holden at the following places, and conducted by the following persons: . . . • John Ellerbe became a widower at the circa 1829 death of his wife Martha Powe.
• He married Mary Caroline Powe, daughter of Erasmus Powe and Esther Ellerbe, on 30 January 1831.
• John Ellerbe died on 6 September 1854 at age 66 in Dallas County, Alabama.
