  • The following appeared on 7 April 1977 in the Navasota Examiner: Funeral services for Langston Goree Wood, 90, of Route 5, Conroe (Leonidas Community), were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 2, from the chapel of the Lindley-Robertson Funeral Home. The Rev. C.H. Stutes, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Navasota, officiated. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery. Mr. Wood died at 9:20 a.m. Friday, April 1, at the Medical Center Hospital in Conroe. Mr. Wood was born Sept. 27, 1886, in Phelps, Walker County, the son of Katie Reed and Rush Brevard Wood. On March 10, 1908, he was married to Miss Annie Madeley, and had been married 69 years this past March. He owned and operated a grocery store here in Navasota for many years. He was a member of the Navasota Fire Department for over 50 years. Mr. Wood was a member of the Navasota Lodge No. 299, A.F.&A.M. and a member of the First Methodist Church of Navasota. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Annie M. Wood of Route 5, Conroe; two sons, Langston Goree Wood, Jr. of Huntsville and Sam Madeley Wood of Conroe; along with four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Douglas Alley and S.K. Madeley, both of Conroe, Bert Hansen, Marcus Mallard, and H.W. Haynie, all of Navasota, and R.B. Wood of Richards. Honorary pallbearers were all members of the Navasota Fire Department.
