         He was a native of Niagara Falls, New York, and came to West Virginia with the National Teachers Corps through Marshall University. He was a 28-year resident of Eleanor.
         He received his bachelor’s degree from Niagara University and his master’s degree from Marshall University. He was a teacher for 27 years for the Putnam County Board of Education, mainly at Winfield Middle School. He was West Virginia Soil Conservation Teacher of the Year in 1976, a member of the Putnam County American Federation of teachers, a member of the WV Educators Association. He was recipient of the WV Muscular Dystrophy Association Personal Achievement in 1995, past president of the Eleanor Lions Club, a lover of science and nature, a musician, having taught guitar lessons for several years. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Bancroft.
         Surviving: wife of 33 years, Sheila Netzer Shipston; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Joseph P. Whittington of Robertsburg; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy David and Lorri Shipston of Wilmington, North Carolina; parents, George and Leona Kane Shipston of youngstown, New York; sisters, Jo Ann Kerins of Niagra Falls and Georgia Davis of San Antonio, Texas.
         Service and burial was held in Niagra Falls. A memorial service will be held locally at a later date. Gatens Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of local arrangements and Rhoney Funeral Home, 901 Cayuga Street, Lewiston, New York 14092 was in charge of arrangements in New York.
  • The following appeared on 3 April 2001 in The Buffalo News: David C. Shipston, formerly of Niagara Falls, died Saturday (March 31, 2001) in a Charleston, W.Va., hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 58.
         Born in Niagara Falls, he was a 1961 graduate of Bishop Duffy High School and graduated from Niagara University in 1965. He earned a master's degree from Marshall University, where he was a member of the National Teacher Corps. Shipston, a 27-year resident of Eleanor, W.Va., taught for 27 years as an employee of the Putnam County Board of Education and was the West Virginia Soil Conservation Teacher of the Year in 1976.
         He received the West Virginia Muscular Dystrophy Association Personal Achievement Award in 1995.
         He served as president of the Eleanor Lions Club. A musician, he taught guitar for several years. He also enjoyed science and nature.
         Survivors include his wife of 33 years, the former Sheila Netzer; a daughter, Laura Whittington of Robertsburg, W.Va; a son, Timothy D. of Wilmington, N.C; and two sisters, Jo Ann Kerins of Niagara Falls and Georgia Davis of San Antonio, Texas.
         A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday in Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 1055 Military Road. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
