  • The following appeared on 3 February 1916 in the St. Charles Union: On Saturday morning January 29, 1916, occurred the death of Mr. James Small, caused by a fall on the ice, evidently due to a second paralytic stroke.
         The deceased was born in Tipperary, Ireland, and came to this country when a child of four years, settling first in Wisconsin, and in a few years moving to St. Charles. He was actively engaged in farming in this vicinity until 2 years ago, when he moved into the city after his first stroke of paralysis.
         Besides the widow, seven children, Fred, John, Thomas, Walter, Ruby and Mrs. J. E. Spencer of this city, and Mrs. Charles Cunningham of Kootenai, Idaho, one brother, Patrick of Bismark, N. D., and twelve are left to mourn his loss.
         Mr. Small was an old respected citizen of St. Charles and will be missed by a host of friends and neighbors of this vicinity.
         The funeral was held from the Catholic church here on Wednesday and the remains were laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.
