  • Donald R. McVittie died on 20 January 2008 at age 77.
  • The following appeared on 24 January 2008 in The Seattle Times & Post-Intelligencer: Don (Mac) McVittie passed away peacefully from lung cancer on January 20th at age 77 in the company of loved ones. He made his transition with the same determination and courage with which he lived his life. His joy, grace, dignity and sense of humor during his last days were a gift and inspiration to his family and friends.
He is survived by Red (Renate), his wife of 55 years, his children and their partners, Jody McVittie and Dan Goodman, Eric and Marina McVittie, Sahara and Jim Pirie as well as 4 grandchildren Maia, Aaron, Arianna Goodman and Emma Pirie. He is also survived by the many "adopted sons" he mentored through his work.
Don's contributions leave the world a better place. An incurable teacher, his search for excellence, unquenchable curiosity, passion for work and play, and love of beautiful music and fine wine resulted in many great friendships and significant advances in gear engineering.
Don wished to express deep appreciation and gratitude to the medical team that allowed him to live his last years and days so fully including Dr. John Addison, Dr. Henry Kaplan, the staff on 12 E at Swedish, his home care team, and Hospice of Seattle. His ashes will be scattered over the waters that brought him so much joy - sailing, cruising, diving and awe of the natural world. A Celebration of his life will be held 1:30 p.m, Sunday, March 2nd at Corinthian Yacht Club, 7755 Seaview Ave. N., Seattle.
Memorials may be made to the AGMA education scholarship established in his name (AGMA Foundation, 500 Montgomery Street, Suite 350, Alexandria, VA 22314. Please write "Don McVittie Memorial Education Fund" in the memo line) or Seattle Opera.
