Lederer and Charles Fleming, 20 years old, of No. 18 Farmer Street, went in swimming in the river near the bridge which crosses the canal at Riverside Park. They got out beyond their depth and both were having considerable trouble when each tried to swim back toward the towpath pier. Neither could make any progress and they called for help.
Among those who were on the towpath, Herbert Pierson of No. 31 Chaddock Street, and George Gardner of No. 201 Esser Avenue, were first to respond to the cries for assistance. Pierson and Gardner jumped in and got to Fleming, whom they got to the pier. They turned Fleming over to a number of men on the pier who worked over him until he was rususcitated.
