  • Sophie Schmahl was born on 20 December 1866 in Rhine, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin.
  • She married Frederick Manz, son of Jacob Manz and Anna Maria Spindler, on 24 March 1885 in Rhine Township, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin.
  • The following appeared on 26 November 1937 in The Sheboygan Press: Frederick Manz, aged 76, resident of Kiel for the past 31 years, passed away at the family residence at 808 St. Paul street at 2:45 a.m. Thursday, after a lingering illness of six months. The deceased, the son of the late Jacob and Anna Marie Manz, was born in the town of Rhine on May 10, 1861. He received his early education in the district schools of Rhine and after his school years assisted his father with his farm duties until he was 28 years old. On March 24, 1885, he was married to Miss Sophie Schmahl, also of the town Rhine, the ceremony being performed on the Manz homestead in Rhine township by the late Rev. J. H. Langpaap. After their marriage the couple resided on the homestead for a year and 21 years in Elkhart Lake where the deceased was a section employer. For the past 31 years the Manz family has resided at their present home on St. Paul street. While in Kiel, Mr. Manz was employed a short time in the Kiel Wooden Ware company plant and for many years in the Kiel Furniture company, now the Kiel Table company. Twelve children were born to the couple of whom four have passed away. Survivors are his wife; 4 daughters and 4 sons; Mrs. Peter [Nelda] Belsher of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada; Mrs. William [Linda] Reseburg of Waupun, Mr. Carl [Anita] Hanke of Fond du Lac, Mrs. Raymond Johnson and Frank, Arthur, Alvin and Benjamin, all of Kiel; 25 grandchildren and one brother, Philip Manz of Plymouth, also survives. Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at the C.J. Meiselwitz Funeral Home here at 2 o’clock. The Rev. E.L. Worthman will officiate and burial will be made in the Trinity Reformed cemetery in the town of Rhine.

  • The following appeared on 22 September 1942 in The Sheboygan Press: (Kiel) Mrs. Sophie Manz, 76, widow of Fred Manz, died suddenly early this morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Hanke, in the town of New Holstein after suffering a stroke. She was born in the town of Rhine on Dec. 20, 1866, the daughter of John and Justine [Reinick] Schmahl. She was married to Fred Manz on March 24, 1885, in the town of Rhine, and for several years after their marriage they lived at Elkhart Lake. For the past 36 years she had lived in Kiel. Mr. Manz passed away in November, 1937. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. William [Linda] Reseburg of Fond du Lac, Mrs. Percy [Nelda] Belshek of Quebec, Canada, Mrs. Carl [Anita] Hanke in the town of New Holstein, and Mrs. Raymond [Adelia] Johnson of Kiel; four sons, Frank, Arthur, Benjamin, and Alvin Manz, all of Kiel; two brothers, Christian Schmahl of the town of Rhine and Fred Schmahl of Kiel; 27 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced in Wednesday’s Press.
  • The following appeared on 22 September 1942 in the Manitowoc Herald-Times: Mrs. Fred Manz, 76, nee Sophie Schmahl, pioneer resident of Kiel, died suddenly of a heart attack early today at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hanke, at New Holstein. /P/ Mrs. Manz was born in Rhine, Sheboygan county, in 1866 and in 1885 was married to Mr. Manz. After their marriage the couple located in Elkhart Lake and later moved to Kiel. Mr. Manz died in 1837. /P/ Survivors are four sons, Arthur, Frank, Benjamin, Alvin, all of Kiel; four daughters, Mrs. William Reseburg of Fond du Lac, Mrs. Percy Belshek, of Quebec, Mrs. Carl Hanke, of New Holstein, Mrs. Raymond Johnson, of Kiel; two brothers, 27 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. /P/ Funeral plans are incomplete and the rites may be held Friday.
  • The following appeared on 23 September 1942 in The Sheboygan Press: (Kiel) Funeral services for Mrs. Sophie Manz, 78, who died here suddenly Tuesday morning, will be held Friday afternoon at 1:30 in the C.J. Meiselwitz Funeral home, and at 2 o’clock in the St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church, Kiel. The Rev. E.L. Worthman will officiate and interment will be in the town of Rhine cemetery. The body is in state at the funeral home.
