  • The following appeared on 30 November 1907 in The Buffalo Morning Express: Fire that followed the gas explosion at Charles H. Leavens's bakery, No. 463 Connecticut street, early yesterday morning practically destroyed the place and endangers the lives of several of its occupants.
         When the firemen reached there, Edward Leavens, father of the proprietor was hanging by his finger tips to a front window sill to escape the heavy smoke within. He was taken down a ladder. His wife was lying helpless on the floor of her room, which was rapidly filling with smoke. She also was rescued. Roland D. Salt, who, with his wife and two brothers, occupied the rooms in the rear of the second floor, had to be assisted through the heavy smoke to safety by the firemen.
         A barn in the rear of the bakery burned. In all, the damage amounted to about $4,000, covered by insurance.
