  • The following appeared on 10 August 1923 in the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal: Lyman R. Oliver, for many years a resident of this city and formerly an inspector in the U. S. Customs service, died this morning at 7 o'clock at his home, No. 1659 Niagara avenue, Niagara Falls. Old age infirmities caused death. He was 82 years old.
         Mr. Oliver was born in this city [sic] in July, 1841 and received his education in the public schools. For 30 years he was employed in the old Holly shops. He then was named an inspector in the U. S. Customs office at Niagara Falls under the late Senator Timothy E. Ellsworth and held that office for 20 years, retiring about two years ago.
         In fraternal circles Mr. Oliver was an Odd Fellow. He was a member of Cataract lodge, No. 54 and Canton Niagara, No. 7, Patriarch Militant.
         Surviving are three sons and [two] daughters, Fred R. of this city, C. Eugene of LaSalle, Philip C., Hattie A. and Grace E. Oliver. of Niagara Falls. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.

Funeral from the home, 1140 Haeberle avenue, Saturday, April 23 at 2 p. m., Rev. Joseph A. Zimmerman officiating. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery.

  • The following appeared on 2 March 1942 in the Niagara Falls Gazette: (Lockport) Fred R. Oliver, 76, veteran bank employe who for years was associated with civic, church and fraternal enterprises here, died this morning at his home, 573 East avenue. He had been in poor health for more than a year. He was the father of Weldon Oliver, of Niagara Falls, member of the Niagara Falls high school faculty.
         Last July Mr. Oliver received an engraved silver plaque from the Marine Midland Quarter Centery club for 61-1/2 years of service with the Niagara County National Bank and Trust company of this city. He was one of four Lockport members of the club and the third oldest Marine Midland employe in point of service.
         Mr. Oliver was born in Lockport, November 4, 1865, a son of Mary T. Oliver and Lyman R. Oliver. He attended the public schools and received his first business experience as a newsboy on Lockport-Buffalo trains.
         On October 2, 1879, Mr. Oliver entered the employ of the Niagara County National Bank, predecessor of the Niagara County National Bank and trust company, as a messenger at $1 a week. At that time the bank was located on the Ballou block on the opposite corner of Main and Pine streets from the present bank building.
         Mr. Oliver was promoted to bookkeeper and finally head of the general books and bank auditing. He never retired but had been on leave since his health failed.
         Since his boyhood he had entered into community affairs. In 1886-1887 he managed the Lockport Pastimes baseball team, champions of Niagara and Orleans counties, generally regarded as the best team ever turned out in this section.
         Mr. Oliver served 12 years on the Board of Education and was elected as its president. He also had served as a member and president of the Board of Trustees of the Lockport public library, a member and president of the Lockport fire board and the Park and Shade Tree commission. He was the first president of the former Lockport Men's Community club and treasurer of the former Grant Republican club.
         A vestryman of Grace Episcopal church, Mr. Oliver was also superintendent of the Sunady school of All Saints' chapel and for more than 30 years had held a license from the bishop as lay reader. He was a member of the board of trustees of the Salvation Army, treasurer of Lockport Council, Royal Arcanum, and a member of Red Jacket Lodge, No. 646, F. and A. M., and Cataract Lodge, No. 54, I.O.O.F.
         Thirty-eight years ago Mr. Oliver married Blene M. Read, who survives him. He also leaves two sons, Weldon R. Oliver, Niagara Falls, and Donald L. Oliver, deputy jury commissioner; a brother, Eugene C. Oliver, and two sisters, Harriet T. and Grace E. Oliver, all of Niagara Falls.

He is survived by his wife, Blene R., two sons Donald L. of Lockport, Weldon R. of Niagara Falls, N. Y., five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two sisters the Misses Harriet and Grace Oliver and one brother Eugene C. Oliver of Niagara Falls, N. Y. Friends may call at the home until Wednesday morning. Requiem will be celebrated at All Saints Chapel Wednesday morning, March 4 at 10 o'clock and Burial Office will be read at 2:30. Interment in Cold Springs cemetery.
