Frederick Held

  • Frederick Held was born on 20 December 1828 in Bechtosheim, Rheinpfalz.
  • Christian Held and Maria Katharina Pfeffer arrived in the Port of New York on 22 June 1840, accompanied by Frederick Held, Catharina Held aboard the Ship Emerald, master George W. Howe, burthen 518 tons.
  • Frederick Held died on 6 March 1885 at age 56 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York.
  • He was interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Buffalo, Erie County, New York.
  • The following appeared on 6 March 1885 in the Buffalo Evening News: Frederick Held, owner of the Buffalo Demokrat, died at his home in this city this morning. For the past two years Mr. Held has been ill and his business has been managed by his son William. A short time since his infirmity developed into paralysis of the brain. At 6 o'lock this morning he died suddenly and unexpectedly.
         Mr. Held was born in 1828 in Bechtelsheim, Hesse Darmstadt, and came to Buffalo in 1840. While yet a boy he entered the employ of the Weltburger as a carrier boy. Since then he has been connected with the paper 42 years. When in '53 the Weltburger united with the Demokrat, Mr. Held entered the firm. In 1875 he became sole proprietor. He was a high Mason Past Master of Concordia Lodge and a Knight Templar of Hugh DePayens Commandery. He was also a member f the Odd Fellows and of the Harugari. Mr. Held was prominent also in the singing societies, and at one time was elected president of the Orpheus. He leaves a wife, a daughter, and two sons. The funeral will be from his house in Morgan street Monday.
  • The following appeared on 7 March 1885 in the Buffalo Evening News: The funeral of Frederick Held will take place on Monday from his home, 180 Morgan street. Interment in the family lot at Forest Lawn.
