  • The following appeared on 29 June 1922 in the Jamestown Evening Journal: A wedding was solemnized Tuesday morning at 8 o'clock at SS. Peter & Paul's Roman Catholic church, when Veronica, daughter of mr. and Mrs. B. H. Whatford, 1010 Jefferson St., was united in marriage with Charles T. Devine of Beaver Falls, Pa. Rev. Father John Daly officiated at the ceremony, which was followed by nuptial mass. The wedding music was furnished by Henry Zimmer, organist, and Hugh Rogers, soloist.
         The bride was attired in white crepe de chine, with a picture hat of white beaded braid. She carried a shower bouquet of bride roses. She was attenended by her cousin, Miss Margaret Harrison, who wore turquoise blue crepe de chine, with a white picture hat and carried pink roses. The best man was Dr. Aldwin Helfenbine of Beaver Falls.
         Following the ceremony, a wedding breakfast was served at the bride's home. Covers were laid for 30. Mrs. Howard catered, assisted by Mrs. Jackson, and girl friends of the bride acted as waitresses. The Out of town guests were Mrs. R. A. Devine, mother of the bridegroom, Miss Bernadette Devine, Jason Shaner, Charles Beightley, Dr. Aldwin Helfenbine, of Beaver Falls, Pa., Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Ardmore of Woodlawn, Pa., and Frank Whatford and son, Herbert Whatford, of Rochester.
         Many beautiful and useful gifts were received and a telegram of congratulation was received from Lieutenant William B----y of Philadelphia, Pa., with whom Mr. Devine served in France during the world war.
         Mr. and Mrs. Devine will spend a few weeks at the former's cottage on the Lake after which they will take an eastern trip and be at home after July 15 at 304 39th street, Beaver Falls, Pa.
         Pre-nuptial affairs were given for the bride by the following: Miss Gertrude Pratt, Miss Cornelia Klump, Mrs. Augustus Serio, Miss Bernice O'Connell, Miss Catherine Kordenbreck and Miss Margaret Harrison.
         The bride remembered the waitresses with lingerie pins and her bridesmaid with a moonstone crescent pin. the bridegroom presented the best man with a silver cigarette case.

  • The following appeared on 13 June 1932 in the Jamestown Evening Journal: Bert H. Whatford, well known real estate dealer, was found dead in bed at his home, 653 East Sixth street, Sunday morning. Mr. Whatford, who was 57 years of age, was subject to heart attacks and it is believed that a sudden attack caused death.
         He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor Whatford; a daughter, Mrs. Charles Devine of Toledo, O; three brothers, Frank and Robert Whatford of Rochester and Charles Whatford in California; an uncle, Henry Harper of Charlotte Center; and two grandchildren, James and Madeline Devine of Toledo, O.
         Mr. Whatford was born at Charlotte Center but removed to Lakewood with his parents while he was yet a boy. His father, the late John Whatford, was for several years superintendent of the Chautauqua Lake Stock farm.
         For some time previous to the fire which destroyed the Gokey building, Mr. Whatford was an elevator operator in that building. He entered the real estate business shortly after the fire and had been engaged in that business ever since.
         He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul's Roman Catholic church, the Holy Name society and Jamestown council, Knights of Columbus. The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at the church. Flowers are gratefully declined. The remains are at the Boyd funeral home.

  • The following appeared on 1 April 1946 in the Jamestown Post-Journal: Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor Whatford, 82, widow of Bert H. Whatford, died on Saturday at Helmuth, N. Y. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Charles Devine of Jamestown; a brother, Charles Taylor of Hampton, Va; two sisters, Mrs. Nellie Ingham of Niagara Falls, N. Y., and Mrs. Albert H. Harrison of Jamestown, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mr. Whatford died June 12, 1932. Born in England, she had resided here for over 50 years and was a member of SS. Peter & Paul's Roman Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America. The remains are at the Boyd Funeral Home and funeral services will be held at the church on Tuesday at 9 A. M. with Rev. Patrick F. Tobin officiating. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
