  • The following appeared on 16 February 1926 in the Buffalo Evening News: Louis H. Buehl, for 70 years a resident of Buffalo and well known by many of its older citizens, died Monday night at his home, 149 Hedley place. He was 75 years old, and with Mrs. Buehl would have celebrated his golden wedding anniversary next June.
Mr. Buehl was born in New York city, but came to Buffalo at the age of five and had lived here since. His father conducted a shoe store in the '50's on the present site of the Hens & Kelly store at Main and Mohawk streets. In those days, however, the residence of Quaker Miller was adjacent and Mr. Buehl used to tell how as a youngster he picked plums and cherries on that site and refreshed himself at a well on the old Miller property.
For 30 years Mr. Buehl conducted a restaurant at 303 Main street before the Ellicott Square building was erected, and at that location became well known. He counted himself a personal friend of Grover Cleveland, who was one of the many prominent Buffalonians among his patrons. In earlier years he had also met and shaken hands with Abraham Lincoln and Millard Fillmore. Mr. Buehl later became associated with the German-American bank, forerunner of the Libert bank.
Most of Mr. Buehls' early days were spent in the old homestead at the northeast corner of Broadway and Ellicott street, now the site of the Buehl block. The family later moved to Niagara street. Mr. Buehl once recalled that his father, when in the shoe business at Main and Mohawk, had an opportunity to purchase the property at $150 a foot. The price was considered too steep, however, in those days, so the offer was rejected.
In 1876 Mr. Buehl married Frederica Weirmann [sic] of Niagara Falls, who survives him, with his children, Mrs. Homer J. Diamond and Louis F Buehl of Buffalo, and four brothers, Charles A. Buehl of San Bernardino, Calif., Henry P. Buehl of East Aurora, and William A. and Edward M. Buehl of Buffalo. Another brother, Robert A. Buehl, and a sister, Sophia, died some years ago.
  • The following appeared on 17 February 1926 in the Buffalo Courier: Louis H. Buehl, seventy-four years old, who died Monday, will be buried from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Homer J. Diamond, 149 Hedley place, tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Rev. Lewis H. Taylor of Trinity Lutheran church will officiate. Bearers will be Frederick Buell, Dr. Edward F., Meister, Lewis Watson, Niagara Falls; Frederick Pfetch, Paul Seittle and Russell Buehl. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.
Surviving are the wife, Fredericka Wiedenmann Buehl, the daughter, Mrs. Diamond; a son, Louis F. Buehl of Buffalo, and four brothers, Charles A. of San Bernardino, Calif., Henry P., East Aurora, and William and Edward M. of Buffalo.
