Jesse Lorenzo Simkins

b. circa 25 December 1801, d. 30 June 1852
  • Jesse Lorenzo Simkins was born circa 25 December 1801 in New York.
  • He married Nancy Bloomer.
  • Jesse Lorenzo Simkins and Nancy Bloomer appeared in the US federal census of 1 June 1850 in Murray, Orleans County, New York. Other members of the household included James Nelson Simkins, Silas Simkins and Mary Ann Simkins. Also in the household was Fidelia Hall (age 20). Silas Simkins (age 72) in Orleans County 1850 may have been Jesse's father.
  • He was a farmer, according to the 1850 census.
  • Jesse Lorenzo Simkins became a widower at the November 1850 death of his wife Nancy Bloomer.
  • Jesse Lorenzo Simkins died on 30 June 1852 in Hulberton, Orleans County, New York.
  • He was interred at Hulberton Cemetery, Hulberton, Orleans County, New York.
  • The following appeared in the Northern Christian Advocate: Jesse Lorenzo Simkins died in Hulberton, Orleans county, N. Y., June 30th, aged 50 years. Having taken a severe cold in the latter part of the fall, it ws soon evident that consumption had marked him for its prey. From the early part of his sickness, he felt impressed that he should not recover. Often did he talk with his family of his approaching change and the hour of his departure. His confidence in the Redeemer was unshaken, and those who were permitted to witness his last moments will remember with what calmness and confidence he assured them that "his trust was in the Lord Jesus Christ."-- He felt that his work was done, and as death approached, he assured us that he had been preparing for it for years. When we remember his exemplary life--twenty-six years of which he was a member of the M. E. Church, and twelve an exhorter--we feel that there was meaning in the words which so often fell from his lips, "My trust is in the living God." He felt a great interest in the spread of the Gospel among all nations, and one of the last acts of his life, was to constitute his four children life-members of the Missionary Society of the M. E. Church. May we follow his example, and finally share with him the rest that remaineth for the people of God.
